NYU DoP

This fall semester at NYU saw the opening of Steven Holl's contribution to the campus, an interior renovation of the Department of Philosophy, located on the corner of Mercer Street and Washington Place.

Visible from a distance (especially at night) is the design's main feature, the walls of the staircase. Vertical orientation and emphasis seem to be the latest thing for Holl, or at least for urban, academic work (see Simmons Hall).

This "swiss cheese" wall extends from the top floor to the bottom, becoming the eye-catching feature of the lobby, a social container for the philosophy students.

  1. "swiss cheese" reminds me of toyo ito's ginza mikimoto building... obviously different scales.

  2. Slowly I am getting tired of those permeable surfaces and facades Holl is using over and over again. Even though they vary in material and pattern, it's a shame.

  3. I don't know much about the scope of the project, but from what is shown here, it strikes me as an expensive inoperable window blind.

  4. Holl's work always reminds me of the sale bin at Pier 1; I am not sure if that is good or bad though.
