With the rise of the starchitect, as an old-timer I personally find architecture is now a race to build the next fancy, shiny soulless monolithic and often self-indulgent structure. The Zahas, Fosters and their tribe...<br /><br />A refreshing and I might add totally unexpected change was when I encountered completely by chance the work of Laurie Baker while on a business trip to India. Organic, flowing, aesthetic, balanced - all those "intellectual" attributes but built with no attempt to be presumptuous or over-bearing with mundane mud and brick. I lived in one of his buildings for a week and unlike many current buildings it was a joy to be in. Apparently there is a film being made on his work, which is worth keeping an eye out for. Hardly known in the west.
