Museum of the Moving Image

Image
The Museum of the Moving Image reopens on Saturday, January 15, after doubling its space in an expansion by Leeser Architecture . For some background on the design, check out my weekly dose on the project and a blog post on its exterior addition . Much attention on the design, here and elsewhere, has focused on the triangular metal panels of the rear addition, but it's clear from a visit on the occasion of a press preview that it's all about the interior. Below is a photo tour of the addition/renovation, mostly of the inside, since the rear addition and courtyard won't be complete until the Spring. The museum is located on 35th Avenue, spanning from 36th Street to 37th Street, with the main entrance halfway down the block on 35th. Since the existing building is a protected landmark, the entry design is minimal, three bays of storefront in the old facade with small triangles of mirrored glass and the museum's name written in clear glass outlined with bright pink ...

Vertical Urban Factory

Image
Opening tomorrow at the Skyscraper Museum is Vertical Urban Factory , "an independent show curated by architectural historian and critic Nina Rappaport ... [that] explores historic and contemporary concepts for the design, structure, mechanization, and economics of multi-storied factories, and their relationship to the urban environment." I'm heading to the press preview this evening and will update with photos and some more information. Update 01.12: Here are some photos from the preview. The exhibition is very thorough, clearly well researched and presented. There is so much information that a short visit was not enough to absorb even part of it; a return trip is necessary. This last shot is looking up at the reflective ceiling, rotated 180 degrees to look right side up.

Book Review: Architecture's Historical Turn

Image
Architecture's Historical Turn: Phenomenology and the Rise of the Postmodern by Jorge Otero-Pailos, published by  University of Minnesota Press , 2010. Paperback, 320 pages. ( Amazon ) When I am confronted with phenomenology in architecture, I think of a handful of architects and thinkers -- Steven Holl, Juhani Pallasmaa, Alberto Pérez-Gómez, David Seamon, Peter Zumthor -- who primarily focus on experience, and secondarily promote a means of design -- a style -- that elevates the experience of architecture and place; think tactile buildings rooted in their place. This general reading of the philosophical movement's use in architecture is expanded and dismantled in Columbia University GSAPP assistant professor Jore Otero-Pailos's history of architectural phenomenology, in which he traces it as a critical movement in postmodernism and as an intellectual approach to history. In other words, the emphasis on experience is present, but phenomenology is shown...

Hermit's House

Image
Hermit's House in Deventer, Netherlands by The Cloud Collective, 2010 Like many young firms today, The Cloud Collective eschews the traditional model and appearance of the sole architect-genius presiding over a design, an impression born of the media more than the reality of design and construction. They call themselves "a social, open and creative party ... a rich variety of people who are practicing their creative skills and talents in different places in Europe." Hermit's House, on the floodplains of the Ijssel River is attributed to Mark van der Net (Groningen, Netherlands) and Daniël Venneman (Madrid, Spain). Hermit's House is a garden retreat, an open design that allows it to be a lounge, guest room, exhibition space, studio, teahouse, what have you. At only 9sm (95 sf) it is basically the size of a bedroom, but its shape is like a crumpled shoebox. In plan it is formed by two overlapping squares turned 45 degrees to the entrance door. A half ...
