Lakefront by Segway
Trying to tap into the hidden potential that is the Segway Human Transporter, the Chicago Architecture Foundation is conducting tours of the lakefront parks and architecture on the vehicle. Up to eight people can partake on the 2.5-hour tour that includes training on the Segway, though the cost is a bit steep at $65 ($60 for CAF members).

Regardless of the tours high price tag and the fact a Segway dealer is coincidentally next door to the CAF, the combination of Segway and Architecture Tour is not a bad idea. It enables more ground to be covered than on foot, but without burning fuel in a car or one of those oh-so-cute but extremely uncomfortable trolleys. Let's hope this inaugural tour brings more with a cheaper fee.

Tangentially, if I may, my feelings are mixed on the Segwaymobile. Sure, its fuel efficiency is impressive and it seems nicely suited to tours like this that cover a lot of ground. But ever since its unveiling I can't get an old Mad Magazine image out of my mind - that of a weeble-wobble-shaped Future Man who spends his life scooting around on a wheeled vehicle and whose legs are rendered spindly and useless vestigial appendages.
ReplyDeleteOh, the Segway - that's why they hate us. Well, maybe not - but they sure look dorky.
ReplyDeleteIncidentally, why do you need helmets? I thought it only when as fast a a brisk run. Dorky with a capital "D".
Also - more fuel efficient than walking?
Would it now be appropriate to start mourning america's ability to walk a couple of miles?
Oops!

we rented them at the adler planetarium for $60 for 3hrs. they make you were helmets even though they only let you top out at 8MPH. IT can go as fast as 12mph, feels faster than what you would think
