Taisei High School in Shizuoka, Japan by Itsuko Hasegawa Atelier

In the enlargement and renovation of a private girls' school into the Shizouka Taisei Junior School & High School - due to falling birth rate - collaboration between grades and environmental comfort were seen as the most important factors. Designed by Itsuko Hasegawa Atelier and located in Shizuoka, Japan, the design is a response to these considerations as well as site constraints and the relationship to its context.

Given the bounded urban site, the school was forced to build up, making it difficult to connect spaces horizontally for collaboration. To create connections in both axes, linked via the main atrium and a patchwork of exterior staircases. The student halls also include terraces that are articulated via colored openings. The elevation at left also shows the atypical classrooms that break from the standard module.

The night shot at left clearly illustrates the random pattern created for the windows. Four different sizes are randomly placed within a ready-made sash, something that allows for ease of construction but also for a variegated facade. Additionally, other functions - corridors especially - are articulated differently to further break down the scale of the large building.

Beyond the articulated exterior and pleasing interior, the most important aspect of the design is invisible to passers-by: the roof playground. With such tight site constraints, rooftop green space allows the ground to be reclaimed for educational use as well as for play, making for a totalizing environment for students.
