Today's archidose #712

Here are some of my photos of the PATH - West Concourse (2013) in New York City by Santiago Calatrava. The walkway, which opened on Tuesday, connects the PATH station (still under construction) with the recently completed Brookfield Place at Battery Park City; photos of the latter to follow. For orientation purposes, the marble wall lines the south side of the walkway so, for example, the top photo is looking to the west, toward Brookfield Place.

    1. Where? Floors and wall are marble. I'd guess the structural arches are steel, though not sure how they are finished.

  2. Beautiful photographs - thank you for sharing. We love the clean lines and the simplicity - yet how it's still very dramatic and striking.

  3. The marble was hand-selected in Italy (meaning, there was site representation at the quarry to make sure every slab met visual standards) and, yes, the framing is welded structural steel with a thick intumescent fire-resistive coating (a somewhat crude finish upon close inspection)

  4. All I see in these photos are highly sound-reflective surfaces. Are there any acoustically absorbent surfaces here---anywhere? If not: with the amount of people who'll be using this daily, hourly, What do you expect the acoustic environment will really be like? Good for humans?

    1. The sound of one pair of heels was quite loud when I was there. There are some acoustic panels on the ceiling between the structure, but that's about it. Some absorption might happen (or the opposite might happen) when the retail moves in on the one wall. I'm guessing it will be a loud space, but a welcome one at that.
