Waking Life
Architect Simon Thornton...made the first sketches after waking in the middle of the night with a strong urge to draw a large bird's head appearing above the roof of the existing house...the house owners insisted that it was a gryphon, and required the addition of a lion's hind quarters. "I have always been excited by the possibility that the world of dreams, and the workings of the subconscious mind, can be a starting point for architecture."Found here.
This is a fascinating blog indeed. It's a great read with excellant pictures.
ReplyDeletethe subconscious mind informing architecture seems a bit suspect to me. this piece looks as if it belongs to a movie set, entirely to contrived, and in the end, will become tired very soon. i admire the work of Gunther Dominig, who uses similar geometry, though,if you have seen his buildings, they are clearly based on the material world and experience.
ReplyDeleteBeen a while, epoch.
ReplyDeleteI was trying to think what this reminded me of and Gunther Domenig is it. One of his houses, I think.
I'm not averse to the subconcious mind aiding in design, though here it's clearly a literal translation. Many times dreams are a feeling or sensation more than a clear image, as in this case. It would be more challenging to capture a feeling or mood, though it might be more rewarding and have some longevity.
