Big Bottoms
A Test of Will has beaten me to the punch (via Curbed), but here's some pictures of 7 WTC's base, anyways. As I briefly mentioned in a previous post, Freedom's Tower's latest redesign features a base that echoes its neighbor under construction, thereby creating a consistent, windowless street presence of "shimmering steel."

At 7 WTC, the "shimmering" facade covers a ConEd substation, while at Freedom Tower its existence would be for safety...and paranoia.

On an overcast day, the exterior doesn't shimmer so much as emit a dull thud.

I totally agree with your "paranoia" comment. Get a grip people. I am getting so sick of this "culture of fear" that we have right now.
ReplyDeleteI have serious doubts about the effectiveness of these bunker-like bases as far as security goes. It seems to me that these do little more convey the illusion of safety. It is possible, at great expense, build a building like the Bismarck, which is at the bottom of the ocean. It's as if everyone has ignored the lessons of the last hundred years of warfare. A bigger bomb always does the trick. Our strength lies in our resiliency as a people, not overdesigned wads of steel and concrete.
ReplyDeleteBig bottoms drive me out of my mind.
ReplyDeleteHow can I leave this behind?
