Chicago 2035

Reader John Tolva sends me this link on his website about the film I, Robot and its depiction of Chicago in 2035.

Mr. Tolva's Flickr gallery collects most of the film's shots of the Chicago cityscape, such as the one above. I haven't seen the movie, but looks like I'll definitely have to check it out.

Reminds me of some of the other missteps from movies based in Chicago. The Fugitive had a dam in mountainous southern Illinois and a Balbo stop on the El. The Blues Brothers car chase seemed to jump all over downtown, sometimes in opposite directions. The skyline in My Big Fat Greek Wedding resembles more a blurry Toronto. I was never able to find the Parking garage from Ferris Bueller. I assume it has been demolished.

Though the worst one I have seen so far is from Taking Lives. They try to pass the skyline of Quebec City off as Montreal when it is 150 miles down river and is the icon of that city.

Anyways, I know what you mean about directors taking liberties with setting for effect over continuity. Tolva points out some interesting discrepincies in the location of buildings with I, Robot. Basically it's the same thing, though the latter uses CG.

And my favorite "goof" in Blues Brothers is the scene where the Illinois Nazis' car is plummeting from the unfinished connection of Wacker to LSD. I'll grant that the scene is over the top as the car appears to be falling from much, much higher, but that's clearly Milwaukee in the background!

The car really was dropped in Chicago. In fact, it was dropped from high above North Pier and landed just across the Ogden Slip on what has become River Something (the name escapes me). If I remember right it was embedded a few feet into the ground. They had to get clearance from the FAA to do that.

The Milwaukee connection is that the scene just before took place where the Blues Mobile stops on the edge, reverses and flips over the Nazi car. That scene and the launching of the Nazi car took place on the huge highway interchange just southwest of downtown Milwaukee. They were constructing it at the time of filming.
