Faraday House

Faraday House in Bern, Switzerland by Thomas Jomini Architecture

The following text and images are courtesyThomas Jomini Architecture, for their Faraday House, a sustainable house in Bern, Switzerland, clad in copper, with high energy efficiency.

The Faraday House is located in the Lorraine district of Bern, a workers’ neighborhood of old clapboard residential houses alternating with dull post-war buildings. The area has evolved over the last two years into an "alternative” urban village.

Fueled by earth probe, the house is well insulated and with controlled ventilation. It provides cover for wind and weather, as well as noise and the electromagnetic fields of nearby electric power, hence the name “Faraday House”.

The corrugated copper sheet cladding will age quickly and this will give it a touch of sensuality. Through oxidation, the copper will change its color to dark brown, and after 20 to 30 years to light green. This is the first time that an experimental spirit has visited Bern and Lorraine is arguably the only district where this would be acceptable.
