1WTC Book Talk

Image
For those in and around New York City, Judith Dupré is giving a talk on her new book One World Trade Center on Wednesday evening at, appropriately enough, the Skyscraper Museum in Battery Park City. Details for this free event (RSVP required) can be found on the Skyscraper Museum website , while  onewtcbook.com  has loads of information on the book and building. And on a semi-related note, be sure to check out Sunday's New York Times Magazine , which is dedicated to "Life above 800 feet in a city relentlessly on the rise."

Colossus

Image
Get ready to expend a lot of bandwidth downloading a slew of PDFs. Colossus US Modernist Library , a project of North Carolina Modernist Houses, has made hundreds of issues of old architecture magazines available in digital form with the goal of becoming "the largest open digital architecture magazine collection in the world." Of particular note are issues of Progressive Architecture , which ran from 1945 to 1996, and Architectural Forum , which dates back to 1892 and ceased operations in 1974. [November 1995 issue of Progressive Architecture] The description of the ambitious, ongoing project from ncmodernist.org : All across America, architecture magazines from the 20th century are rotting in basements, if they haven't already been trashed. These visually brilliant publications chronicled the best of Modernist architecture along with the talented, progressive architects of that era. To have your building featured in these magazines was a real honor for an archite...

Book Review: Dream of Venice Architecture

Image
Dream of Venice Architecture edited by JoAnn Locktov, photographs by Riccardo De Cal, published by Bella Figura Publications, 2016. Hardcover, 96 pages. ( Amazon ) About a week before I went to Venice to cover the Biennale for World-Architects I received this book in the mail. It is the second "Dream of Venice" book, following plain old Dream of Venice  from 2014. I have not seen the earlier book, but from its description on the Bella Figura website it sounds similar to the new one: "luminous photographs complement the intimate thoughts, memories, poems and stories of notable contributors from the worlds of art, literature, design, cuisine, music, and filmmaking." Dream of Venice Architecture  does the same, but with a clear focus on architecture, with contributions by Tadao Ando, Mario Botta, Cynthia Davidson, Massimiliano Fuksas, Jonathan Glancey, Frank Harmon, Jürgen Mayer H., Robert McCarter, William Menking, Witold Rybczynski, Annabelle Selldorf, Thomas ...

Reporting from the Front

Image
I'm back from Venice and slowly catching up with things that were put on the backburner while I was covering the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale for World-Architects. Post will resume here at a slow pace, so in the meantime check out my first bit of coverage from the Biennale, on  Reporting from the Front , the exhibition curated by Alejandro Aravena. Articles on the national pavilions and collateral events will follow. [Gabinete de Arquitectura's Golden Lion-winning installation in the Reporting from the Front exhibition]
